Investigations in Light, Space, and Form |
Objectives:
*exploration of the direct relationship between light and space
*material as a generator in design exploration
*exploration of the inherent physical and structural characteristics of materials
*develop understanding of the formal grammar of architectural representation (orthographic drawings)
*enrich graphic representations through the use of shade and shadow
*develop ability in the decision-making process of design, focusing on the establishment of a critical base and parameters for a project
*design through the act of making
Design and build a working illumination device to create a specific mood, space, depth, using the materials efficiently, safely, and beautifully. It must also obscure the view of the light source, protecting the eyes from glare. The primary criteria for this Illumination Device is the definition of space through the articulation of light and form. Establish additional criteria for the design by selecting one or more design issues (i.e. transparency/translucency, symmetry/asymmetry, connections, etc). Balance, both visual and gravitational is important, and the illuminator should not easily be knocked over. Focus on plan/section/elevation, scale, sketch perspective, shade & shadow, model making skills (craft).

This illumination device
was conceived in observation
of the iris origami.
It has qualities of shadow cast within it
created by the layers of Mylar folded on top of itself.
When the lighting device is illuminated,
it provides a sense of fire;
however as a sculptural piece,
without the light, it appears as ice.
There are threads wrapped around the piece
as though to prevent the
sculpture from unraveling.
