2.1.2.1. Course and Enabling Objectives

B C D
Course Objectives

Create a scatterplot in the TI-84 Plus Silver graphing calculator The TI-84 Plus Silver will be used in instruction This must be completed according to a given example
Enabling Objectives

Turn on the TI-84 In the classroom using the TI-84 The parent should locate the ON button to turn on the calculator
Access the STAT menu In the classroom using the TI-84 This must be done accurately before the parent can access the next step
Access the Edit… function within the STAT menu In the classroom using the TI-84 This must be done accurately before the parent can move on
Enter a list of independent variables In the classroom using the TI-84
Use the given list as provided by teacher
Enter a list of corresponding dependent variables In the classroom using the TI-84 Use the given list as provided by teacher
Check and compare lists to make sure entered ordered pairs are correct
In the classroom using the TI-84 This will show that the parent has all of the correct ordered pairs to complete the graph
Access equation editor
In the classroom using the TI-84 This must be done before moving on to the next step
Clear out unwanted equations In the classroom using the TI-84 This step will prevent an error in the calculator
Access the STAT PLOT menu In the classroom using the TI-84 This must be completed before moving on
Select a plot to use In the classroom using the TI-84 This will be a step where the parent will have an option of choices, but need to select the correct one
Select correct values for the plot In the classroom using the TI-84 The values that were entered in the lists earlier are recalled for graphing
Choose the window to display the plot
In the classroom using the TI-84 This is the final step that will present our accurate scatterplot

2.1.2.3. Learner Assessment Strategies
This is a class that is designed for parents of students who are currently in Advanced Algebra (Algebra II).  The idea is to give parents some skills at using a TI-84 or TI-83 graphing calculator so they do not feel helpless when their child comes to them for help.  Most of these parents have never used or even seen a graphing calculator and thus have not prior knowledge as to how to use the technology.  It will be imperative to walk the parents through each process step-by-step to make sure they are getting the process down.  It will also be important to offer a worksheet so they may work ahead, if they like.  The parents taking this course will be the ones who would like to know more about the calculators as it is, so they will be intrinsically motivated.  This will be a class that is held in the high school once a month during the school year to allow for flexibility in parents’ schedules.

2.1.2.2. Determining Learner Characteristics

I will be using mastery teaching for most of this course.  It is expected that each parent would complete each objective during the class.  If a parent cannot complete an objective, they cannot move on to the next objective, as each objective is a successive step in the process.  I will definitely need to go through each part of the process step-by-step, as well as provide a note sheet that will remind them of the process in case they need to reference the topic in the future when trying to help their child.
No grades will be given out, but I will assess each parent by observing their work during class time then give them individual worksheets to complete to show they comprehend the content.
By completing this task, parents will be able to assist their kids with completing the graph of a scatterplot in their TI graphing calculator.

2.1.2.4. Rationale for Learner Practice

This program is already set up for me to be able to check student work as they go.  I will have each calculator set up for the TI-Navigator system, which will allow me to capture a screenshot of each calculator at any given time.  I can use this to make sure each student is at the correct place in the process and also completing the work correctly.
For practice, each student will have chances to apply their knowledge of making a scatter plot by entering sets of data to be graphed.  Using the TI-Navigator before moving on to the next step will allow me to make sure each student is where they need to be, and I can assess any errors that may arise.
